KIEMON
-the man who salvaged a Dutch sunken ship-

On the seashore, Captain Steward, several crews, Nagasaki magistrate's officers, and other spectators watched the scene in front of them, and shouted "Banzai" over and over again.

They all took pleasure in the raising of the ship. In severely cold weather, Kiemon's strategy and method (his well thought-out strategy; the way of salvaging the ship by using rhythm of the tides, how to pull the ship toward the shore by wind power, and so on) were very terrific. So it can be said that Kiemon's wisdom won.
It was supremely satisfying for someone not to call him Kiemon but instead Chie-mon (Chie means "wisdom").

His success had spread not only in Holland but also all over the world. And Kiemon became a famous person.

From the following day, the Dutch factory in Nagasaki began to reconstruct the Eliza. Ship carpenters who knew Kiemon also helped with the work.

At the same time, copper and naphthalene were lifted from the ship's bottom one after another.

They completely finished the repairs of the ship. On May 23, the Kansei era 11 (1799) the Eliza left Nagasaki port. However, the ship turned back because strong windswells made it break down. So the ship was fixed up again, and returned to Batavia on September 20.
